The Council for a Secure America was established by key domestic oil and gas producers and leaders of the Jewish community to educate the public about the importance of their common objective of decreasing U.S. reliance on imported oil from the Middle East. CSA is the successor to a similar group organized during the 1980’s to address the same basic issue.
Since 2006, the United States has decreased imports as a percentage of U.S. oil consumption from 60 percent to less than 45 percent, thus reducing the leverage that oil producing countries in the Middle East have on U.S. foreign policy and strengthening our ally Israel. A number of people who follow U.S. energy policy believe that it is possible that the U.S. ultimately could be North American energy self sufficient. New advances in drilling and production technology have enabled environmentally sound production from geological formations that heretofore were incapable of producing oil and gas.
In order to pursue this goal of North American energy self-sufficiency, the United States will need to take a number of steps which include further increasing domestic production of oil and natural gas, encouraging energy conservation and continuing to develop alternative and renewable sources of energy. This will have the effect of improving our balance of payments situation and creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the United States.
The United States is Israel’s closest friend and ally and provides significant financial and political aid to this strong democracy, encircled by unstable Islamic governments, some of which are determined not only to wipe Israel off the map, but also to bring western civilization to its knees. However, what is not well known are the many ways Israel benefits the US. Israel is on the front line fighting terror and provides America with very valuable intelligence, in addition to cutting edge, game changing technology, both military and civilian. It is clearly in America’s best interest that Israel, a strategic democratic ally, remains strong and secure.
CSA plans to conduct educational symposia and engage in travel and research activities to educate the public about the United States’ dependency on foreign oil, the benefits of energy independence and the reasons it is in America’s best interest to keep Israel a strong and secure presence in the Middle East.
This is one of those unique moments in time when smart domestic policy can also further the foreign policy objectives of our country.
